What is a Forest School
Forest School is an inspirational process that offers children opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self-esteem, through hands on learning experiences in a Woodland environment. This approach is one that Ofsted views as outstanding
Forest Schools originated in Europe in the early 20th century as a way of teaching about the natural world. By the 1980’s it became part of the Danish early years programme.
Forest School is a long term child-led educational process that promotes, observes and explicitly supports the social, emotional and physical development of children in a Woodland surrounding.

'Bush Craft for Beginners'* is led by a specialist Forestry practitioner with woodland crafts, creating natural resources, growing, making and sessions finishing with stories, songs and snacks around our campfire.
With a Forest School approach children can explore and enquire, they are encouraged to take part in activities that present 'risk' such as tree climbing, mud kitchen, hide and seek, whittling, den building and a camp fire, But following rules that reduce the risk. The result is powerful with children's self-esteem increasing and an interest in exploration and enquiry presenting itself within the Forest School sessions and also within other aspects of learning both at nursery and home.

We believe that a Forest School Ethos gives children an understanding of the natural environment and how to handle risks and more importantly, how to use their own initiative to solve problems, co-operating with their friends. So, when the children had a plan to build a 'dragon resting area' everyone leant a hand pulling branches together, laying bracken for a soft landing and lots of mud cakes and grass team which would certainly cheer most tired dragons up.
As a child, I am sure most parents remember climbing trees, splashing in puddles or building a rope swing. At Mumbles Day Nursery we create these ever lasting memories for your children everyday.
We recommend parents come and see this outstanding learning environment
